Dossier / people
Dreadmoor characters: the people who own your debt.
The demo has a small cast and a long memory. These are the faces behind the contracts, the Dry Dock key and the shop listing that decides whether your engine gets fixed.
Essence first. The invoice comes later.
Malcolm — the player
Malcolm is a weathered fisherman with a past he does not explain and a boat that needs more work than he does. The demo opens with voices from his life before the flood, then leaves most of the backstory to the world and the journal.
He is voiced in first person, and the game uses his hands and tools rather than a third-person avatar. That perspective is the core of Dreadmoor's identity: you are not commanding a boat from above; you are standing on it, hauling lines and walking into the ruins.
Gill and Bozur — Betsy and Sons
Gill and Bozur run the trading post. They are the first people to offer Malcolm help, and the first to make sure he remembers it. Their Essence treatment keeps the Blight at bay but creates a debt that structures the opening act.
They are also the quest hub. The five-Snapper contract, the Wind-Up Tin blueprint, the three-Softgrazer assignment and the three-Harpooner contract all come through them. The shop sells the Carburetor for 50 after the Harpooner delivery, but only if you actually open it and buy the part.
John the Fifth — the Dry Dock engineer
John the Fifth is the engineer who controls the Dry Dock. When you first meet him, his Moonshine Still is broken and his patience is shorter than the repair list. He will not hand over the Dry Dock Key until the still is working, which sends you to Angler's Island for Coral Fiber and into the water for Bug Slime.
After the key, John becomes the boat progression guide. He walks you through the fuse box, the hull cleaning, the hull repair, the research tree and the Upgraded Engine. If a module seems missing, it is usually in the Dry Dock storage locker rather than in your inventory.
