DREADMOOR Field guide

Endgame puzzle / The Throat

Dreadmoor The Throat: power the gate, then give it water.

The demo's final obstacle is not a boss. It is a generator, four broken machines, two water wheels and a gate control that refuses to work until all of them agree. Here is the order that ends the run.

Final demo puzzle 9 steps Updated 31 Oct 2026
A Dreadmoor boat approaching the dark gate complex at The Throat

The gate is a machine with a water problem.

Quick answer

Find the Fuel Can and start the generator. Install the Thermal Coil, the Gear or Axle and two Buckets, then repair the Water Pump. Use the four channel controls and the blue hook-gun pivots until both water wheels turn. Then use the Gate Control and sail through.

The Throat at a glance

The puzzle has three layers: electricity, machinery and water flow. Most stuck runs are missing one layer. The gate control is the test at the end, not the solution itself.

01

Arrive with fuel and a repaired hull

Check the tank and hull before leaving the Trading Post. The Throat requires moving around the structure on foot, so treat it as a destination rather than a quick dock. The Upgraded Engine is part of the intended route.

02

Find the Fuel Can and start the generator

Dock near the gate complex and find the Generator. It initially reports no fuel. Search the nearby working area for a Fuel Can, refuel the generator and use the startup interaction.

03

Try the Gate Control

With power running, use the Gate Control. It fails and changes the objective. This is intentional: the gate needs both power and a working waterway, not just a button press.

04

Install the Thermal Coil

Find the damaged electrical assembly and install a Thermal Coil. Check the workshop notes and the lower platforms; the coil is a distinct part from the Gear and the Buckets.

05

Install the Gear or Axle

One damaged assembly has a dedicated gear slot. Bring the replacement Gear or Axle to the slot and install it with the interaction prompt. This does not complete the other repairs.

06

Install both Buckets

The water-wheel machinery needs two Buckets. Search the workshop and lower platforms for both, then install them at their separate mounting points. If the objective does not advance after one, look for the second wheel assembly.

07

Repair the Water Pump in place

Find the damaged Water Pump and use its repair interaction. Do not return to John's Lathe to craft a new pump; the puzzle wants the existing mechanism repaired.

08

Route water to both wheels

With the machinery repaired, the objective changes to configuring water flow. Use the four channel controls and pull the glowing blue pivots with the hook gun to move the planks. Both water wheels must turn; one wheel is not enough.

09

Open the gate and set out

Return to the Gate Control once both wheels are running. The gate lowers, the objective becomes Set Out, and the route beyond opens. Board the boat and sail through until the Thank You for Playing screen appears.

How the water-flow controls work

Once the machinery is repaired, the gate still needs water. The four channel controls change the flow through the connected channels, while the glowing blue pivots are physical mechanisms the hook gun can pull to move planks into position.

The objective is not “turn on the water.” It is to get both water wheels turning. Watch each wheel after every adjustment. The red and green indicators on the controls are local state, not proof that the whole system is working. Continue adjusting until both wheels move and the journal advances to the gate control.

The Throat troubleshooting

ProblemCauseFix
Gate Control does nothing Generator not running or machinery still damaged Check generator fuel/startup, then the Coil, Gear, both Buckets and pump.
Journal says “repair machinery” A part is missing or not installed Inspect every damaged installation before carrying parts; one prompt may still be empty.
Journal says “configure water flow” Water is not reaching both wheels Use the four channel controls and the blue pivots; keep adjusting until both wheels turn.
Only one wheel turns Flow routed to one side Check the second wheel assembly and the channel controls between the incoming water and each wheel.
Generator says no fuel Fuel Can not used Search the nearby working area inside The Throat; a can is available there.
One Bucket installed Second mounting point still empty Search the workshop and lower platforms for the second Bucket.
Gate opens but demo does not end Boat not through the passage Board the boat and sail through the opened gate until the completion screen.

What happens after the gate opens

The large gate lowers and the objective changes to Set Out. Return to the motorboat and follow the newly opened route through the passage. The final stretch still requires steering, so do not expect the completion screen the moment the gate moves.

On the far side, the demo ends with a Thank You for Playing screen. That is the end of the October 2026 demo; the area beyond is not available as a continuation. Dreadmoor enters Early Access on 9 November 2026.

The Throat FAQ

How do I open The Throat gate in Dreadmoor?

Start the generator with a Fuel Can, then repair the waterway machinery: install the Thermal Coil, the Gear or Axle, two Buckets and repair the Water Pump. After that, use the water-flow controls and blue pivots to get both water wheels turning, then operate the Gate Control.

Where is the Fuel Can in The Throat?

There is a Fuel Can in the working area inside The Throat. Search the platforms and workshop near the generator; you do not need to return to Betsy and Sons just because the generator reports an empty tank.

Where are the two Buckets in The Throat?

Search the workshop and the lower platforms around the water-wheel machinery. There are two separate Bucket mounting points, and installing one is not enough to advance the objective.

Why is the gate still closed after starting the generator?

Power is only the first step. The gate control fails until the damaged machinery is repaired and water is routed to both wheels. Read the journal objective: “repair machinery” means a missing Coil, Gear, Bucket or pump repair; “configure water flow” means the channel controls.

What happens after The Throat in the demo?

The gate opens, the objective changes to Set Out, and you sail through the passage. The demo ends with a Thank You for Playing screen on the far side. The area beyond is not a playable continuation in the October 2026 demo.

Can I do The Throat without the Upgraded Engine?

The route is designed around the Upgraded Engine and the main quest sends you there after installing it. You also need enough fuel for the trip and movement around the structure. Finish the hull and engine objectives first.
